Bright Beginnings

Since childhood we have been told to eat breakfast since it is the most important meal of the day. Science has proven what your parents intuitively knew. Children who eat a healthful breakfast have better functioning immune systems, more energy and score higher on cognitive tests.

During our sleep cycle, our body and brain are actively cleansing, repairing and building themselves in preparation for the new day. Upon awakening, your child's muscles, nervous system, brain, and all bodily cells are eagerly awaiting fuel and nutrients to replenish what was used during the night. This is perfect timing since morning time is breakfast time.

Fill'er Up Please

The medium that delivers nutrients and oxygen to the body is blood, which is over 90% water. Therefore, it is critical that your child has enough fluid in the morning to allow vitamins, minerals and other vital substances to move freely throughout their systems. A glass of water or juice, and/or soy, rice or almond milk, and a piece of fresh, juicy fruit will provide adequate hydration.


Breaking the Fast

Breakfast means breaking the fast. Your child's energy level and most importantly his/ her brain power is dependent upon adequate levels of carbohydrates in his/her system. Therefore, it is imperative that we supply them with appropriate levels of carbohydrates in the morning before he/she starts school. Slow cooking oatmeal, whole grain breads with nut butter and fresh fruit are all a great start for any day. Your child will be more likely to crave candy if these carbohydrates are missing from the morning routine.

Finally, make breakfast a fun time for yourself and your family by connecting with them before they begin their day. Five to ten minutes of quality time in the morning will go a long way for your child emotionally. Children grow up fast and before we know it, they will be teaching their kids about the benefits of a healthy breakfast. Good habits start young, so remember, when you rise and shine its healthy breakfast time.
