We don’t necessarily need solar panels and electric cars to live a “green” lifestyle. We just need to be thoughtful and consistent in our actions. These simple actions do a lot to help preserve our precious resources and our planet.Here are a few things you can do to make your home a green sanctuary:
- Use green, toxic-free or low-toxic cleaners and household products.
- Avoid using chemicals on your lawn and look into alternatives.
- Recycle what you can and avoid buying packaging that cannot be recycled.
- Compost everything you can including your food scraps, non-recyclable paper and lawn waste. (*See the compost article that is featured in the articles section.)
- Buy post-consumer recycled paper products, such as toilet paper and use towels instead of paper towels.
- Turn off the water when brushing your teeth.
- Turn off the lights when not in use.
- Save water that is wasted while you wait for it to heat up in a bucket and water the grass or garden.
- Invest in energy-saving appliances when it is time to replace your existing ones.
- Buy used appliances, etc. when available.
- Ask yourself, “Do I really need this item” before purchasing it. Sleep on it if necessary.
- Eat organically grown foods and support local organic farmers when possible. If you have the space,plant an organic garden or use pots to grow herbs, etc…
